Job Description and Duties

The CalSTRS Office of General Counsel Branch is seeking a skilled and technically driven individual to work as an Information Technology Specialist II within the Information Security Office Division.


The Office of the General Counsel is comprised of multiple highly visible and complex business areas: Office of Legal Ethics & Accountability (OLEA), Enterprise Information Management & Legal Operations, Information Security Office, Legal Services, Investment Counsel, and Litigation Services.


The Information Security Office (ISO) is CalSTRS' authority on information security and cybersecurity matters. The Information Security Office protects CalSTRS data assets from unauthorized access, use, misuse, disclosure, destruction, modification, or disruption. Read about the programs in ISO below.

Under the general direction of the Chief Information Security Officer, the incumbent serves as the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Security Architect and is a subject matter expert on cybersecurity and managing third-party risk technologies, projects, solutions development, and strategy. The incumbent performs a wide variety of tasks requiring regular innovative problem-solving where guidance is not readily available. The incumbent establishes and defines the technical vision and strategy for AI security, leads and mentors project teams, advises management on cybersecurity strategy and formulates information security policies, standards, procedures, guidelines and technical requirements for systems, networks, architecture, and third-party vendors/service providers to ensure the security, confidentiality, integrity, availability, and privacy of CalSTRS information assets. This position is in the Information Security Engineering and System Engineering, and IT Project Management domains.

The ideal candidate will possess the following skills: 

  • Solid understanding of AI models and terminology; can choose appropriate models for specific tasks.
  • Understands how to tailor data for different models and considers ethical implications.
  • Knowledge and experience with current AI trends and can communicate the benefits of different AI models effectively.
  • Knowledge and experience in planning, development, testing, installation, maintenance, and support of critical applications and solutions.
  • Exhibits professional demeanor, and the ability to establish and maintain cooperative relations including excellent communication and people skills.


Every 12 months, based on performance evaluation, employees may receive a 5% salary increase until they reach the maximum salary for the position.


Telework Information: We offer a hybrid approach including in-office and remote work solutions with staff working on-site at our  Headquarters in West Sacramento.

STATEMENT OF QUALIFICATIONS:

(SOQ) is REQUIRED and MUST be submitted with your application to be considered for this position. The SOQ serves as documentation of each applicant’s ability to present information clearly and concisely in writing. Each question must be numbered and addressed in the same order as the questions below. The SOQ must be typed, no more than two pages in length, and 12-point Arial font.

1. Describe your experience evaluating, architecting, testing, and securing generative artificial intelligence systems, including the time spent performing each function.

2. Describe your experience defining and documenting security controls for complex technology systems, including the time spent performing each function.

3. Explain how you would balance security requirements with the need for artificial intelligence innovation.

Background Investigation

Prior to employment with CalSTRS, a background investigation (BI) will be conducted. The BI consists of a Personal History Statement and fingerprinting through the Department of Justice. The BI will check criminal and civil records and, if applicable, verify education and check driving records.

This position may be subject to disclosure and disqualification requirements concerning economic conflict of interest in government work, including the  Conflict of Interest Code that applies to CalSTRS team members and the  Political Reform Act , which require disclosure of certain investment information and use of a designated trading platform for securities transactions, as well as filing a  Statement of Economic Interest (Form 700) .
