Job Description

Are you passionate about ecological education, wildlife conservation, and inspiring the next generation of environmental leaders? We provide high school students with an exceptional opportunity to engage in ecological education, conservation service, and hands-on field research in the beautiful Bitterroot Valley of Montana. We are seeking two enthusiastic and skilled field instructors to mentor students and lead this summer's program.

About the Program
The program, established in partnership with Ranch in Florence, Montana, offers a month-long immersive experience for high school interns. Students collaborate with staff and partners on ecological research, conservation projects, and outreach while developing independent studies. Since 2014, this program has provided participants with invaluable skills in ecological research and conservation.

Job Overview
As a Field Instructor, you will mentor 12 high school interns during two month-long sessions. From Monday to Thursday, you and the interns will camp on-site at Ranch, engaging in activities such as:

Conservation projects (10 hours per week): Invasive species management, fence repair, and more.
Ecological research (16 hours per week): Wildlife observation, data collection, and analysis.

You'll be responsible for creating an inclusive and supportive environment while ensuring the safety and well-being of all participants. In addition, you'll help foster curiosity, leadership, and environmental stewardship.

Key Responsibilities
Lead a safe, engaging, and educational experience for interns.
Facilitate environmental education lessons tailored to diverse groups of high school students.
Mentor interns as they develop and complete independent research projects.
Supervise conservation projects and ensure adherence to safety protocols.
Collaborate with interns, colleagues, and program staff to maintain open communication and inclusivity.
Provide first aid and manage emergencies as needed, following established protocols.
Maintain clear, accurate documentation of program activities and outcomes.
Manage program gear and vehicles, ensuring they are clean and in good working condition.
Participate in program planning, training, and wrap-up activities.

Qualifications
Required:
Education: Bachelor's degree in biology, ecology, environmental education, or related fields; or equivalent experience.
Certifications: Current Wilderness First Responder (WFR) and CPR certifications.

Experience:
2-3 years teaching ecology or science-based curriculum to middle or high school students.
Leadership experience in outdoor settings with young adults.
Field research experience in wildlife, botany, geology, or ecology.
Camping and outdoor skills, with the ability to teach these to others.

Skills:
Strong teamwork and communication abilities.
Risk management expertise and emergency response skills.
Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, with experience working with youth from diverse backgrounds.
Physical Fitness: Ability to lift 50 lbs, hike up to 5 miles/day, and work outdoors in varying weather conditions.

Other:
Minimum age of 21.
Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
Legal authorization to work in the U.S.

Preferred:
Curriculum development experience.
Leave No Trace trainer or master educator certification.
Schedule and Location
Season Dates: Approximately May 28 - August 15.

Details:
Attend a 5-day training session between May 28 and June 6.
Lead two internship sessions: June 8 - July 3 and July 14 - August 7.
Participate in office-based work on Fridays during sessions and additional days between sessions.
Assist with program wrap-up tasks and an end-of-season symposium on August 13 in Missoula.

Compensation
Field Work: $160/day (Monday - Thursday).
Training Days: $125/day.
Office Work: $16/hour.
